Hey there! Let’s talk about some new findings on COVID-19 treatments. Remember how everyone was buzzing about ivermectin? Well, researchers at the University of Oxford have some news for us.
What’s the scoop?
Ivermectin, that medicine usually used for parasites, doesn’t seem to be the COVID-19 superhero we hoped for. The researchers found that it doesn’t really make a big difference in how quickly people recover or whether they end up in the hospital.
What did they do?
The researchers set up a big study called the PRINCIPLE trial. They wanted to see if any existing medicines could help with COVID-19. They looked at ivermectin because some early studies made it look promising.
What did they find?
- People taking ivermectin got better about 2 days faster than those who didn’t (14 days instead of 16).
- But here’s the catch: this small difference doesn’t really change much in the big picture.
- Ivermectin didn’t lower the chances of going to the hospital or, sadly, of dying from COVID-19.
- They also checked how people were doing up to a year later. While there were some tiny differences, they weren’t big enough to matter in everyday life.
Who was in the study?
Most of the people (94%) had already been vaccinated against COVID-19. This is important because it tells us about ivermectin’s effects in a population where most people have some protection from vaccines.
What does this mean for us?
The researchers are pretty clear: they don’t think doctors should prescribe ivermectin for COVID-19, at least not in places where most people are vaccinated. They even suggest not doing any more studies on ivermectin for COVID-19.
Why is this important?
- It helps doctors make better decisions about treating COVID-19.
- It saves people from taking a medicine that probably won’t help (and might have side effects).
- It helps healthcare systems focus on treatments that really work.
What else did they learn?
The PRINCIPLE trial looked at other medicines too. They found that some antibiotics (doxycycline and azithromycin) and an anti-inflammatory drug (colchicine) don’t help with COVID-19 either. But they did find that a steroid inhaler called budesonide, which is used for asthma, might actually help!
What’s next?
The researchers are now looking at antiviral medications in another big study called PANORAMIC. They’re still working hard to find better ways to treat COVID-19.
So there you have it! While ivermectin might not be the answer we were hoping for, this study helps us understand more about treating COVID-19. And remember, the best protection is still vaccination!
