What’s the scoop?<\/h2>\n

Ivermectin<\/a>, that medicine usually used for parasites, doesn’t seem to be the COVID-19 superhero we hoped for. The researchers found that it doesn’t really make a big difference in how quickly people recover or whether they end up in the hospital.<\/p>\n

What did they do?<\/h2>\n

The researchers set up a big study called the PRINCIPLE trial. They wanted to see if any existing medicines could help with COVID-19. They looked at ivermectin because some early studies made it look promising.<\/p>\n

  1. People taking ivermectin got better about 2 days faster than those who didn’t (14 days instead of 16).<\/li>\n
  2. But here’s the catch: this small difference doesn’t really change much in the big picture.<\/li>\n
  3. Ivermectin didn’t lower the chances of going to the hospital or, sadly, of dying from COVID-19.<\/li>\n
  4. They also checked how people were doing up to a year later. While there were some tiny differences, they weren’t big enough to matter in everyday life.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Who was in the study?<\/h2>\n

    Most of the people (94%) had already been vaccinated against COVID-19. This is important because it tells us about ivermectin’s effects in a population where most people have some protection from vaccines.<\/p>\n

    What does this mean for us?<\/h2>\n

    The researchers are pretty clear: they don’t think doctors should prescribe ivermectin for COVID-19, at least not in places where most people are vaccinated. They even suggest not doing any more studies on ivermectin for COVID-19.<\/p>\n
