General Medication Description

Aleve, containing the active ingredient naproxen sodium, is a non-prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used to alleviate mild to moderate pain and reduce inflammation associated with various medical conditions such as arthritis, muscle pain, backache, and menstrual cramps.

Mechanism of Action

Aleve works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, substances in the body that mediate inflammation and pain. It acts primarily through the non-selective inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2, thereby decreasing the formation of prostaglandins.

Indications for Use

Aleve is indicated for the reduction of mild to moderate pain, including headaches, toothaches, and minor arthritis. It is also effective in managing symptoms associated with musculoskeletal disorders and alleviating fever. In some cases, Aleve can be used for the relief of pain and inflammation related to soft tissue injuries.

Dosage and Administration

For adults and children over 12, the usual dosage is one caplet per 8 to 12 hours. A second caplet may be taken 12 hours after the first dose if needed, but not exceeding three caplets in a 24-hour period. Aleve should be taken with a full glass of water, and it is preferable to take it with food or milk to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.

Pharmacokinetics

Aleve is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral intake, with peak plasma levels occurring within 2 to 4 hours. It has a half-life of approximately 12 to 17 hours in adults, allowing for twice-daily dosing. Contraindications

Side Effects

Serious side effects, though rare, can include gastrointestinal bleeding, cardiovascular events, and kidney dysfunction.

Special Populations

Special consideration should be given to elderly patients, who may be more susceptible to the adverse effects of NSAIDs. Aleve should be used cautiously in patients with pre-existing cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, hepatic, or renal conditions. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before using Aleve, as it may pose risks to the fetus or infant.

Storage Conditions

Aleve should be stored at room temperature, between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius (68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit). It should be kept in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. The medication must be kept out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidental ingestion.

Overdose Management

In cases of overdose, symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and dizziness. Severe cases can result in gastrointestinal bleeding, hypertension, renal failure, and respiratory depression. Immediate medical attention is required, and treatment may involve activated charcoal administration, supportive measures, and symptomatic care in a healthcare facility.

Aleve is available in various formulations, including oral caplets, tablets, and liquid gels. Different formulations contain specific quantities of naproxen sodium, typically ranging from 220 mg to 250 mg per dose.
